Building Community in DI
The first thing that must happen to build a positive learning environment is for people to get to know each other. The teacher must be proactive in making sure the students know each other and in making sure the teacher knows their students. Whether it be through icebreaker activities, cooperative activities, or student graphs, teachers must let their students know up front that they know all students are different. The teacher must also let the students know from the beginning that they will teach in a fair way in order to meet all learning styles in their classroom.
When this happens, it gives students a sense of worth. It creates a team-like structure and everyone can feel like they have a way to pitch in for success. Cooperative learning activities can go a long way in making this happen. Below, I have attached a checklist for cooperative learning activities. Carol Tomlinson states that "it works much better in teaching and learning if we build a team." It creates a much safer emotional environment and happy students make happy learners. Students can be happy if they feel like they are all in it together and it discourages students from being isolated or disconnected.
For the most positive environment, the teacher must enjoy what they are doing. When you have a teacher who is excited to teach for all students, it creates an atmosphere free of stress and full of motivation. Students will feel respected and feel like they have power to make decisions about their learning process.
